Description
In a nutshell:
A concentrated, aromatic and organic Argentinian red made with a bit of Italian influence.
The lowdown:
Masi Tupungato are an offshoot of the the well known Amarone specialist Masi in the Veneto. They established this, their sustainably run, organic Argentinan estate, to make wines that combine the best aspects of Argentina's climate and soils with some of the winemaking techniques of the Veneto. Passo Doble is made with 70% Malbec which is re-fermented with 30% Corvina in the Apassimento style and results in a big and powerful wine with ripe cherry and sweet spicy aromas which lead onto a palate of ripe fruits of the forest flavours with notes of prune and liquorice wrapped up with soft tannins and finishing with a lengthy sign off.
The Producer:
Masi Tupungato is a project set up by the well-known Italian estate of Masi based in the region around Verona and famous for their Amarones among other wines. They considered that they found the right conditions in Mendoza's Tupungato Valley where they could replicate the techniques of the Venetian regions in a completely eco-sustainable manner. Here they grow a mix of regular Argentinian varieties like Malbec and Torrontes together with such Northern Italian specialities as Corvina and Pinot Grigio. They also make their wines using the appassimento technique as is common back home in the Veneto as well as all farming being done on an organic basis.
When to drink:
A versatile wine with easy appeal, it's great with grilled and roasted red meats
