Description
In a nutshell:
A developed and elegant Bordeaux blend from Stellenbosch by Morgenster Estate.
The lowdown:
Morgenster very much take their inspiration from Bordeaux in style and they also like to mature their wines for longer than most because they consider extra maturity adds to the complexity. The Louren River Valley Red has slightly herbaceous notes of lavender and thyme on the nose lead onto a medium-full bodied palate with classic Bordeaux nuances, yet with a bit of South African approachability. On the palate cassis and raspberry fruit flavours mix well with balanced cedar oak and a hint of smoke and spice.
The Producer:
Italian born Giulio Bertrand then in his mid-60s, bought the neglected Morgenster Estate in 1992 and immediately set about transforming the historic property in Stellenbosch's Somerset West into a leading wine producer. And he was the energetic dynamo that drove things right up to his death in 2018 at the age of 91. Bordeaux is the driving influence behind their wines and they specialise in four of that region's classic varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These days director and wine Consultant Pierre Lurton, of Cheval Blanc and d'Yquem fame, works in tandem with resident winemaker Henry Kotzé and viticulturist Bob Hobson, which sees them turning out their reliably good Bordeaux blends.
When to drink:
A Right-Bank style wine it will work really well with roasted lamb chops.
