Description
In a nutshell:
A luscious and approachable 5ème Cru Classé Claret from a well loved estate.
The lowdown:
This grand old Bordeaux estate lying just to the west of Chateau Latour has a reputation for consistent quality year after year which is rightly justified. The 2018 blend comprises around three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon and with around 18 months spent in oak barriques has masses of ripe, sweet and polished red and black fruits followed by toasty vanilla notes. It's not overly firm but the tannins are nicely supple and well balanced by a fresh acidity. An engaging slight sweetness shows at the finish making it a very enticing wine.
The Producer:
Château Batailley is classified as a 5ème Cru Classé and sits in the prestigious appellation of Pauillac in the Médoc. It's a neighbour of the famous Mouton Rothschild and, over recent decades, it's earned a reputation for being particularly good value. It's the flagship estate of the well known negociants Borie-Manoux owned by Denise and Emile Castèja and currently run by their son Philippe. The name Batailley, unsurprisingly, comes from a battle which was fought on the site during the Hundred Years' War.
When to drink:
Drinking well already and if cellared it'll be on top form all the way through to the mid 2030's.
