Description
In a nutshell:
A crisp, dry, vibrant Riesling from one of Germany's best producers.
The lowdown:
Tonschiefer (formally known as Dry Slate) Riesling from the sloping Leistenberg vineyards lying in a small side valley to the Nahe, near Dönnhoff's home of Oberhausen. The 25-30 year old vines grow on decomposed blackish-grey slate soils, perfect for producing elegant wines such as this. Pronounced, vibrant lime, lemon and mouthwatering grapefruit with touches of floral notes that follow through onto the dry palate. Taut, bright and crisp with lots of refreshing acidity on the medium-full body with some riper stone and tropical fruit notes that appear midway through.
The Producer:
The Dönnhoff estate is firmly established as one of the best producers in the beautiful Nahe Valley and can trace its roots back to the mid-1700s. They're based in the small town of Oberhausen in the heart of the region where they have around twenty hectares of vines mainly planted with Riesling. Under the guidance of Helmut Dönnhoff, winemaker from the early 1970s, the estate established its reputation as one of the finest in the region with admirers such as Hugh Johnson and Robert Parker. Helmut's son, Cornelius, is now at the helm and with the skill and passion he's clearly inherited the quality of the estate's output continues to impress.
When to drink:
This wine is drinking well now but does have the capacity to age for the rest of this decade.
Suitable for Vegans
