The lowdown:
Gunderloch is one of the top wineries of the Rheinhessen region and their vineyards which line the western bank of the Rhine just south of Mainz are the source of some excellent Rieslings of which this, their Dry Estate Riesling is a prime example. The word Trocken that appears on the label translates as 'dry', but that doesn't mean austere. This is clean and crisp with powerful, citrussy and zesty flavours, a great minerality and a hint of sherbet lemon bite. A benchmark example of modern German dry Riesling.
The Producer:
Founded in 1890 by banker Carl Gunderloch the estate, based in Nackenheim on the banks of the Rhine just south of Mainz is now run by his descendant Johannes Hasslebach. Among the almost 13 hectares of vineyards Gunderloch has a substantial holding in the famous Rothenberg vineyard which is on a steep bank of the red slate soil that produces sublime wines. From here and their other vineyards they produce a wide range of, mainly, rieslings from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese. Their elegant and subtle wines have put them among the most highly regarded producers in the Rheinhessen region.
When to drink:
The depth of flavours here make this a good match to pork and firm white fish dishes.
