Description
France: Alsace
Crisp & Fresh White
Dry - Medium-Bodied - Unoaked
ABV 13.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Old-vine Alsace Sylvaner that brings crisp lemon and pear, a gentle floral lift and a clean, mineral finish.
The Lowdown:
If you're after subtle, textural minerality rather than heady aromatics, Sylvaner is a good place to start in Alsace. Riesling and Gewurztraminer are the grapes that grab the attention in these parts, but François Sorg shows just what can be done. Clean and precise, with a little weight from the time spent on lees, it keeps a bright, streamlined feel. White flowers, lemon zest and orchard fruit run through, finishing fresh with a light ginger twist. The acidity is firm, the mineral line savoury, and a gentle grip gives it shape. A neat counterpoint to the region's more flowery offerings.
The Producer:
Founded in 1965 by the late Bruno Sorg, Domaine Bruno Sorg is now in the capable hands of François and Régine Sorg, along with their son Antoine. Over the years they've built up the estate with the acquisition of some prime sites around Eguisheim and built a modern, temperature-controlled winery just outside the village. Their style is clear - richly concentrated wines with precision and balance. Riesling is taut and mineral, Pinot Gris has real depth, Gewurztraminer drives with spice, and even Sylvaner shines. They make the full Alsace line-up and handle each with equal skill.
When to Drink:
Crisp acidity, gentle aromatics and a savoury mineral line suit delicate flavours - think asparagus, trout, simple shellfish and herby veg - just don't overchill it.
