Description
In a nutshell:
Escape the predictable Sauvignon Blanc zip with this Stellenbosch beauty - all creamy richness and subtle oak.
The lowdown:
This South African Sauvignon Blanc presents a delightful interplay of ripe citrus and gooseberry notes. Its richer profile stems from the winemaker's intentional choice of extended fermentation in seasoned oak barrels. This technique imparts texture without overwhelming those classic varietal flavours. Expect concentrated citrus and stone fruit aromas, hints of fennel, and a refreshingly taut, mineral acidity. The result is a superb Sauvignon Blanc with complexity and satisfying weight, a departure from the purely racy expressions of the variety.
The Producer:
Waterkloof, established in 2004 by Paul Boutinot, is a bit of a favourite of those who appreciate wines made with care and a more than a touch of conscience. This family-run estate is proudly organic and biodynamic, even sporting the WWF Biodiversity Champion title. Perched on the Schapenberg hills overlooking False Bay, their vineyards benefit from cool breezes and a leisurely growing season, producing wonderfully balanced fruit. In the cellar, winemaker Nadia Langenegger allows the grapes to speak for themselves with minimal interference, creating wines that feel genuine, refined, and very much a taste of their unique surroundings.
When to drink:
A substantial white which is a delightful partner for oysters or fresh grilled crayfish, its richness adding an extra layer of pleasure.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
