Description
Germany: Pfalz, Baden & Franken
Crisp & Fresh White
Dry - Light-Bodied - Unoaked
ABV 12.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Bright, zesty Sauvignon Blanc from Pfalz limestone soils, with clean citrus precision and subtle mineral depth from sur lie ageing.
The Lowdown:
Sauvignon Blanc may be a relative newcomer in Germany's Pfalz, but here it's found an ideal partner in higher-altitude, limestone-rich sites. Fruit comes from selected parcels, fermented cool to preserve lift and clarity, then left sur lie until bottling - with no stirring - for added texture and depth. Only a single light filtration is carried out before bottling. The result is crisp and vivid, with lemon, lime and grapefruit zest over a fine mineral backbone, and a subtle herbal twist on the finish. Freshness meets understated complexity in a style that's both invigorating and distinctly moreish without tipping into flamboyance.
The Producer:
Growing up, Gerd Stepp's future was never in much doubt - born into a Pfalz winegrowing family, he was in the vineyards from an early age. Before returning to Bad Dürkheim in 2010, he worked vintages from New Zealand to Africa and across Europe, building experience along the way. His aim is to make wines that "express the authentic and true character" of their origin, keeping soils naturally fertile by avoiding unnecessary chemicals. Working with around 20 local growers, including his family's own small plots, he produces several varieties in small batches, keeping the focus firmly on quality.
When to Drink:
Serve well-chilled with goat's cheese, grilled sea bass, or asparagus - all natural accomplices to its citrus-edged friskiness.
