Description
In a nutshell:
A wonderfully fresh and fruity Georgian skin contact white.
The lowdown:
Archil Guniava has crafted a standout skin-contact wine blending three native Georgian varieties: Tsitska, Tsolikouri, and Krakhuna. Known for his exceptional natural wines, this one majors on freshness and purity of fruit. The seductive aromas burst with minerality and stone fruit ripeness, balanced by a citrus freshness on the palate and theres a depth and richness without being overly weighty. Recognised as one of the best in a recent Decanter Magazine tasting, it showcases why Guniava is rated as one of Georgia's top winemakers.
The Producer:
Archil Guniava's small operation, with less than 2 hectares of vines and an annual production rarely exceeding 15,000 bottles, sits up in the hills above Zestafoni in Georgias Imereti wine region. Despite the vineyards diminutive size, Archil cultivates a multitude of native varieties. Winemaking here is done traditionally, with fermentations in old clay qvevris buried in the cellar floor, and he follows minimal intervention in the cellar and organic practices in the vineyard. Although theres not much of his wine about, his reputation as one of Georgias best winemakers means some of it has ventured abroad, receiving wide praise.
When to drink:
Great with food and really versatile. Works really well with chicken and white meat dishes, salads and cheeses.
