Description
In a nutshell:
A silky and elegant Côte de Beaune red from a highly regarded village.
The lowdown:
The village of Volnay is known best for its reds which are some of the best on the Côte de Beaune. And the estate of Jean-Jacques Girard produce wines that only enchance that reputation. This comes from a tiny plot of vines planted in 1959 and is deliciously soft and aromatic, almost delicate in nature. On the palate the combination ripe red fruits and a touch of vanilla creaminess, from the 15 months spent in oak, adds up to a very charming number indeed.
The Producer:
The Girards are one of the oldest winemaking families in the village of Savigny-Lès-Beaune with a history stretching back over five centuries. Today the current owner of the domaine, Jean-Jacques Girard and his son Vincent combine the best of modern and traditional techniques to produce a range of wines that all show great purity and elegance. The reds are delicious, accessible wines which are fantastic for drinking when young but also have great potential for ageing. And the whites have really come into their own since their new winery, completed in 2014, allows them to be fermented in their own separate temperature controlled cellar.
When to drink:
While this is drinking at its best already it also has the legs to stay on top form for a few years yet. Pair it with the likes of creamy pork dishes or lapin au moutarde.
