Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe and expressive organic Côte de Nuits Burgundy.
The lowdown:
One of the northerly Côte de Nuits villages the wines from here have a similarity in sturdiness of style to the neighbouring appellation of Gevrey-Chambertin. It's never been among the more famous Burgundy names and therefore there is good value to be had from here. This organic village cuvée from Frédéric Magnien is juicy and supple with lots of bright cherry fruit flavours and is held together with a good mineral structure and subtly smooth tannins. Overall, a very inviting and rewarding wine.
The Producer:
Nestled in the picturesque village of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côtes de Nuits, Domaine Magnien is a family estate now helmed by Frédéric Magnien. Since achieving biodynamic certification in 2015, they've taken a thoughtful approach to winemaking, notably using terracotta amphorae for ageing. This method promotes gentle micro-oxidation without the flavour influence of oak. The estate produces wines from their own vineyards under the name "Domaine Michel Magnien", while also crafting wines from carefully selected bought-in fruit, under the "Frédéric Magnien" label. It's an understated yet passionate endeavour in the heart of Burgundy.
When to drink:
This is just the sort of bolder Côte de Nuits red that makes a great partner with the likes of poultry or veal dishes.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
