Description
In a nutshell:
A polished Tuscan red from Maremma, blending Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties for dark cherry and plum flavours, a savoury herbal edge, and smooth tannins that give it depth while retaining its Italian charm.
The lowdown:
Maremma is a relatively new Tuscan wine region, best known for its connection to the rise of "Super Tuscans", and this is a wine that follows right in that mould, albeit at a more modest price. It's an impressive blend of 50% Sangiovese with 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, half of which is aged in oak for 12 months. The result? Generous dark fruit, gentle spice, and a soft, velvety texture. The tannins are firm but beautifully integrated, making it approachable yet refined, with just the right balance of richness and freshness.
The Producer:
Rocca di Frassinello, founded in 2002, is a joint venture between Paolo Panerai of Castellare di Castellina and Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite. The aim was to blend Tuscan and Bordeaux winemaking expertise and capitalise on the "Super Tuscan" phenomenon. Located in the Maremma area, the purpose-built winery is seriously impressive, featuring state-of-the-art gravity-fed systems and superb visitor facilities. Little expense has been spared to create something special, and the quality of the wines speaks for itself showing what happens when Italian tradition meets French innovation in a stunning Tuscan setting.
When to drink:
Drink now or keep for another 3-4 years - perfect with wild boar ragù, grilled lamb, or aged Pecorino, where the wine's dark fruit, savoury notes, and smooth tannins shine.
