Description
Vibrant & Tangy White
Dry, Medium-Bodied, Lightly Oaked
USA, ABV 14.5%, 75cl
In a Nutshell:
Bright, elegant Chardonnay from Napa with gentle oak influence.
The Lowdown:
While the spotlight often falls on Stag's Leap for its world-famous Cabernets, its Chardonnay deserves serious attention too. From vineyards across southern Napa Valley, this is a bright, composed expression - vibrant and structured, with a gentle nod to oak. The 2023 vintage brought cool nights and a long, steady ripening period, preserving freshness while building flavour. Fermented mostly in French oak barrels, just under a quarter of them new, it also underwent partial malolactic and spent time on its lees for added depth. The result is focused yet layered: citrus and white peach to the fore, with touches of almond, lemon curd and wet stone. Creamy but finely drawn, it finishes clean and poised - a Chardonnay that plays to finesse over flash.
The Producer:
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars shot to international fame in 1976 when its Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over Bordeaux's best at the now-legendary Judgment of Paris. It was a landmark moment - not just for the winery, but for Napa Valley as a whole. Founded only four years earlier by Warren Winiarski, who had previously worked under Robert Mondavi, the estate quickly became a standard-bearer for elegance and structure in California Cabernet.
Situated in the Stags Leap District AVA in eastern Napa, the winery's iconic SLV and Fay vineyards lie on volcanic and alluvial soils, bringing intensity and finesse to the wines. Though the Paris tasting is now firmly in the history books, the ambition and attention to detail that sparked it all remain unchanged. Today, Stag's Leap continues to craft age-worthy Cabernets with balance, precision and a style that speaks clearly of their distinctive Napa origins.
When to Drink:
Drinking well already, with enough freshness to hold for a few years. Pairs beautifully with grilled chicken, roast monkfish or creamy pasta - dishes that echo both richness and lift.
