Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth, medium bodied and toasty Highland single malt
The lowdown:
Royal Lochnagar is just along the road from Balmoral and it's through this connection in Victorian times that it acquired the 'Royal' prefix. The 12 Year Old is quite an enticing whisky with a generous, fruity nose, subtle smoky notes and a palate with flavours of gingerbread and toasty spices. The overall feel is of a smooth creamy character and it finishes with a light honeyed touch which hints of grassiness.
The Distillery:
Situated in Deeside, a stone's throw from Balmoral, Royal Lochnagar caught Queen Victoria's attention in the 19th century, earning its 'Royal' prefix. It's one of the smallest distilleries in Diageo's stable. By focusing on long ferments and slow distillation, their whiskies boast a certain lightness. Most are aged in ex-Sherry butts, giving the finished products a fruity background and good mid-palate depth. While much of the output is single malt, some also contributes to the premium Johnnie Walker Blue Label blend.
