Description
In a nutshell:
A lovely rich and balanced Premier Cru Puligny-Montrachet.
The lowdown:
Gerard Thomas is well-regarded for crafting rich, oak-influenced whites from the Côte de Beaune, and this single-vineyard Premier Cru certainly lives up to his reputation. The 2022 vintage was a generous one, yielding whites with impressive depth and the ability to age gracefully. Sourced from the Premier Cru vineyard of La Garenne, near the hamlet of Blagny and bordering St Aubin, it spent ten months in traditional oak barrels, with just 20% being new. It's got pronounced aromas of lemon and white stone fruits, alongside hints of tropical fruit and a touch of vanilla. The palate is rich and weighty but balanced beautifully by crisp, minerally acidity, leading to a long, satisfying finish.
The Producer:
Gérard Thomas has been quietly running his estate situated in the quaint, tucked away, Côte de Beaune village of Saint-Aubin since 1982. His two daughters, Anne-Sophie and Isabelle have been working with him for a number of years. Their vineyard holdings extend to around 12 hectares in the Côte de Beaune appellations of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin itself. While they make a small amount of red wine, in this part of the world Chardonnay is king and it's their whites on which their reputation is based. Not being based in the nearby prestigious communes of Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet might mean that they go a little bit under the radar compared to some other producers. However, without any doubt, they are the equal of many of their better-known peers and, for sure, their wines with the Saint-Aubin appellation are extremely good value for money from this part of Burgundy.
When to drink:
Drink now or keep for the rest of the decade. Try with Dover Sole, lobster, or rich veal dishes
