Description
In a nutshell:
A bold, rustic and quite delicious Italian red blend from the little known Molise region on the Adriatic coast.
The lowdown:
The region this comes from is well off the beaten track and the DOC Biferno is not very well known, but this terrific red produced by a group of small and passionate producers is a real gem and fantastic value. It's made from Montepulciano grapes grown in the cooler coastal areas of the region along with Aglianico from warmer inland vineyards and, after fermentation, spends 18 months in large oak barrels which adds extra layers of complexity. With cherry scented aromas there's lots of plum, damson and dried fruits flavours coupled with some earthy smoky notes and a touch of vanilla from the oak ageing coming though at the finish.
The Producer:
Camillo de Lellis is based in the Molise region of Italy which is on the Adriatic coast just north of Puglia. The region itself, the second smallest in the country is sparsely populated and is not one that trips off the tongue being a bit off the beaten track for visitors. Camillo de Lellis themselves are a group of small and passionate producers who are determined to show the world the quality this somewhat overlooked part of Italy is capable of. They've put in significant investment to their vineyards and production facilities and the wines they make are of very good quality. And, while the region itself remains under appreciated, very good value.
When to drink:
Very pleasurable drinking at an everyday price, great with a lasagne or homemade cottage pie.
Suitable for Vegans
