Description
In a nutshell:
A versatile and very enjoyable Italian red from the Adriatic coast.
The lowdown:
Montepulciano is one of Italy's most popular red wine grapes particularly in Abruzzo along the central Adriatic coastline. After fermentation it's matured in stainless steel for a few months before bottling and as a result it retains a ripe, plummy fruit freshness that makes it delightfully easy drinking. It has a crisp minerality to balance the softness of the fruit and with its medium body has a welcome mellowness.
The Producer:
Although originally established by Gino Umani Ronchi in the heart of the Verdicchio Classico region, it wasnt until the 1960s when the Bianchi-Bernetti family bought the estate that things started to get more businesslike. They kept the Umani Ronchi name, but firmly put their own stamp on things. Massimo Bernetti was the one with a keen eye for expansion opportunities and with over 200 hectares under vine in Castelli di Jesi, Conero and Abruzzo, and a dedicated winemaking facility in each of these regions, theyve achieved their objectives whilst still retaining an unwavering focus on typicity and quality. In the early 1990s Massimo's son Michele joined the business and the two of them continue to be the powerhouses behind the estate's continuing success.
When to drink:
A very adaptable food matching wine it'll go well with grilled lamb, pork or chicken and most pasta dishes.
