A fruity and grippy Nebbiolo from the small DOC of Bramaterra in northern Piedmont.
The lowdown:
Up in Alto-Piemonte approaching the Alpine foothills a cluster of small (some very small!) wine areas produce Nebbiolo, called Spanna locally, based wines that offer something a bit different and something far better value then their Barolo and Barbaresco cousins of the Langhe 60 miles further south. Up here they will lay claim, and possibly rightly so, to growing Nebbiolo first and up until the Second World War had a reputation and popularity in northern Italy, however times changed and it is only relatively recently that there is a renewed interest in these great little wine regions.
Only a very small amount of wine is produced in Bramaterra, situated just to the west of Gattinara, and almost uniquely these wines don't have to be 100% Nebbiolo. Noah is a tiny husband and wife team winery and their Salero contains 70% Nebbiolo along with 20% Croatina (aka Bonarda, and as the name suggests probably originated from Croatia many moons ago) and 10% Vespolina (a grape found in a few places across northern Italy). These two other varieties add a bit of boldness and roundness to the wine, all helped with a microclimate of cooling breezes and warming soils allowing a long and complete ripening of the grapes.
Beautiful aromas of ripe red and dark cherry, berry fruit and touches of spice. The palate is broad, smooth with a bit of tannin grip. Great ripeness and depth of fruit with notes of cassis, cherry, strawberry touches of earthy spice and a long, minerally, balanced finish.
When to drink:
Drink now though will keep well into the 2030s. Try with a local rustic risotto, beef stews, game and other hearty meat dishes.
