Description
Rich & Powerful Red
Medium-Full Body, Lightly Oaked
Piedmont & North West Italy, ABV 14.0%, 75cl
Vegan
In a Nutshell:
An expressive, richly flavoured Barolo, packed with dark cherry, rose, and earthy spice, all wrapped up in firm yet elegant tannins.
The Lowdown:
Barolo is the pinnacle of Piedmontese reds, known for its firm tannins and high acidity, built to age. This one though has had three years in large oak casks, which has smoothed things out nicely, making it already quite approachable for a youngish Barolo. Classic floral notes sit alongside dark plum, leather, and delicate violets, with hints of woodsmoke and warm spice adding depth. Rich, powerful dark fruit flavours are balanced by ripe tannins, savoury complexity, and a long, persistent finish. A very likeable example - proper Barolo character without too hefty a price tag or the need to wait a decade.
The Producer:
Alasia, is part of one of Piedmont's largest and most forward-thinking co-operatives and situated in the Monferrato hills in the heart of Barbera d'Asti territory. Here they work with 230 grower members to source quality grapes from around 690ha of vineyards. Despite their size they have a real family run feel about them thanks largely to the husband and wife management/winemaking team of Claudio Manera and Lella Burdese. Founded in 1954 by Livio Manera, father of the current director and winemaker Claudio, over the past 60 years they've become a major winemaking force in Piedmont.
When to Drink:
Well worth decanting to let it open up, this is spot on with roast beef, venison, or slow-cooked lamb, rich meats that stand up beautifully to its structure, depth, and savoury complexity.
