Description
In a nutshell:
Like a wild hedgerow after a summer rain: this distinguished Pinot Noir offers subtle earthy notes, a whisper of spice, and lingering red fruit flavours.
The lowdown:
This fellow whispers of summer rather than shouts. Like a basket of just-picked raspberries and cherries, with a touch of intriguing earthiness and a hint of farmyard funk (in the best possible way, of course). Crafted by New Zealanders who've clearly spent some time studying the Burgundians, it's made from Pinot Noir vines nicked from Burgundy itself, grown on a sun-drenched slope overlooking their prized Chardonnay vineyard. Light on its feet with a surprising amount of finesse, it's a delightful little number for those who appreciate a glass of red that's more about conversation than a full-on monologue.
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
A silky, delicately perfumed red to savour with roast pork, a simple duck breast, or a comforting bowl of tomato and basil pasta.
