The lowdown:
Istria, in western Croatia, is not a million miles from the Friuli region of Italy at the top of the Adriatic and there's certainly something of a connection when it comes to winemaking. The Kozlovic family have been making wines here since 1904 and produce a range of widely admired wines. The grape used here is 100% Teran which is a native of Istria and is here grown on south facing vineyards with at 240 metres above sea level. Fermented in stainless steel prior to 8 months maturation in large wooden barrels this is a wonderfully refreshing light to medium bodied red with bright red fruits, a bit of sour cherry and some earthy notes and a hint of dark chocolate. If you like Loire Valley Cabernet Franc then this is one to try.
The Producer:
The Kozlovic family have been making wine in the Istrian region of Croatia since 1904. Their modern winery is near the town of Buje at northern end of the Istrian peninsula close up to the border with Slovenia. In terms of terroir the region has many similarities with the nearby Friuli in Italy and the wines, food and people share a real connection. The winery is run by Gianfranco and Antonella Kozlovic and they currently cultivate 25 hectares of vineyards planted with a mix of indigenous and international varieties. All harvesting is done by hand. In 2012 they opened a new winery in their spectacular location where they're keen to welcome visitors. Gianfranco is a perfectionist and he is constantly striving to improve his wine. He takes a modern approach to winemaking and produces seriously good wines.
When to drink:
Slightly chilled, it's a perfect match for lighter pork dishes - grilled chops, roast tenderloin, or charcuterie - its bright acidity cutting through the richness and lifting every bite.
