Description
In a nutshell:
Silky, small-production Beaujolais Cru with an extra dimension of purity and complexity.
The lowdown:
This gem from Thierry Janin's small estate in Beaujolais' most celebrated Cru, Moulin-à-Vent, punches well above its weight. It's from a small plot of old vines (around 50 years of age) and sees about ten months in seasoned oak before being bottling unfined and unfiltered. The nose is all brambly red fruits - cherries, raspberries and plums - with a hint of intriguing spice and a touch of floral lift. The palate echoes the aromas, full of ripe, juicy fruit, while displaying a real elegance. A lovely balance between fruit, acidity and a touch of minerality, leading to a long, lingering finish. A small-production treasure and a must-try Beaujolais Cru.
The Producer:
Thierry Janin's small estate, Domaine de lIris, in Moulin-à-Vent is quite the hidden gem. His few hectares of old vines are rooted in the appellation's renowned pink granite, coaxing out wines of real depth and minerality. An organic advocate in the vineyard and with a hands-off approach in the cellar Thierry's style is all about letting the terroir sing. Wild yeasts and minimal sulphur are his watchwords, resulting in pure, vibrant Beaujolais that showcases the Gamay grape in its finest form. Production is always tiny, but the quality is undeniable.
When to drink:
Will work well with Asian cuisine, fattier fish like salmon, charcuterie and cheeses, and poultry.
