Description
In a nutshell:
A bold, brooding and intensely fruity Turkish red made from indigenous grapes grown in eastern Anatolia.
The lowdown:
Eastern Anatolia is one of the cradles of ancient vine growing and we're pleased to have found a delicious wine from here made with local grape varieties that's well worthy of a place on our shelves. Öküzgözü and Bogazkere are the two varieties used and are traditional blending partners making well balanced food friendly wines. After fermentation in stainless steel it's aged for 21 months in a mix of French, American and neutral oak. The result is a bold and concentrated wine which has lashings of ripe cherries and dried plums enhanced by notes of toasted bread and cedar. The palate has powerful and intense dark fruit flavours lots of spice and a good kick of tannins as well. Very well structured, it all leads up to a a long and full finish.
The Producer:
Kayra Wines are one of Turkey's most important wine producers and while a relatively new player - they've been around since 2006 - they've a wealth of experience and extensive vineyards and facilities and with foreign investment and expertise they've been starting to make waves. Since the mid-2000s winemaking operations have been under the guidance of Daniel O'Donnell, a Californian with extensive experience in his home country and across the world. Daniel is consultant winemaker with a skilled team working under him. However, he's very much hands on himself and over the last decade or so the quality of their wines has come on in leaps and bounds.
When to drink:
With its full and bold favours this is a natural partner to the hearty, meaty cuisine of eastern Turkey.
Suitable for Vegetarians
