Description
In a nutshell:
One of the northern Rhône's famous names and a bold, brooding blackberry with a touch of lingering liquorice - undeniably intriguing.
The lowdown:
With Chapoutier at the helm and Hermitage's pedigree, this is a northern Rhône classic that certainly lives up to expectations. It opens with sweet berries on the nose, offering a refined elegance. On the palate, there's a concentrated burst of blackcurrant and raspberry, complemented by a hint of pepper and liquorice, which adds a lively freshness. Eighteen months in oak have given it excellent structure, yet the tannins remain soft and gentle, making it approachable even in its youth. A vintage that strikes a fine balance between richness and finesse and perfect for early enjoyment.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to drink:
Perfect with roast beef or rich game like venison - enjoy now or any time before 2032.
