Description
At a Glance:
| Rich & Powerful Red | Full-Bodied | Oaked | Biodynamic | Rhône | ABV 14.5% | 75cl |
In a Nutshell:
Full-bodied biodynamic Hermitage - dense, dark and built to age.
The Lowdown:
Hermitage is a heavyweight - known for producing the deepest, most ageworthy Syrah in the northern Rhône. This biodynamic release from Chapoutier more than lives up to that reputation. It's sourced from several parcels across the hill, fermented in concrete, then matured in oak for extra structure and depth. The nose brings blackberry, plum and cracked pepper, with liquorice and a touch of woodsmoke underneath. Theres richness and grip on the palate, but also definitionlayers of fruit, spice and savoury complexity that keep unravelling as it goes. Serious, expressive and full of character, this is Hermitage with real presence.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to Drink:
Best with roast beef, venison or wild mushroom dishes - bold, savoury food to match its structure. Will age gracefully for 1015 years or more.
