The Lowdown:
Gran Cerdo began with a winemaker and a few stubborn bankers. Gonzalo Gonzalo, based in Rioja Alta, was refused loans because his low-intervention style was seen as too risky and unconventional. His answer was this wine - Gran Cerdo ("Big Pig") - and a label featuring a pig's head stuffed with cash, dedicated to those same financiers. The wine itself is Rioja in everything but paperwork: pure Tempranillo fermented in stainless steel and bottled unoaked to keep the fruit vivid and unvarnished. Bursting with cherry, plum and a hint of spice, it's supple, bright and full of personality - a natural expression of Rioja's fruit-driven side, made outside the rules and all the more distinctive for it.
The Producer:
Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba, the guy behind Gran Cerdo wines, definitely does things his own way. And when it comes to his wines, that's no bad thing. The pigs head on his labels is his playful dig at the bankers who refused him a loan when he was starting out. But, despite that, he's been up and running for a while now, following his passion for making delicious wines. He sticks to biodynamic principles in his small vineyards but blends that with a modern approach. The result? Fantastic, natural wines that really stand out.
When to Drink:
Serve slightly cool with tapas, grilled chicken or chorizo anything that plays well with a lively, fruit-forward red.
