Description
In a nutshell:
An organic Cabernet Sauvignon from the famous Frog's Leap estate of Napa Valley
The lowdown:
Napa is known for its Cabernet and this a wine that proves why. This is made using fruit from their Rossi vineyard and produces a wine with beautiful balance, restraint and respect for the terroir it's grown on. While containing all the attributes that made Napa famous this wine has some lovely subtleness to the cassis, cedar and black olive flavours. Only 20% new oak used with this wine and there is a pleasing lightness and freshness to this 2018 vintage.
The Producer:
Founded by John Williams and Larry Turley in 1981, the winerys name, Frog's Leap, is derived from a combination of the site of their first winery (Frog Farm) and one of John's previous places of employment (Stag's Leap). After Larry left to set up Turley Wine Cellars they moved, in 1994, to their current Napa Valley premises, the Red Barn in Rutherford. Frog's Leap is fully committed to sustainable farming and their grapes have been organically grown since 1988. John also considers that the best wine is made from non-irrigated vines so all their grapes are grown in that manner. This is also a part of his view of the importance of terroir and that the winemaker's role is to see that the quality of fruit is reflected in the finished product. Given the success Frog's Leap has had over the years it's difficult to argue with his approach.
When to drink:
It's a wine that will last. Pair it with things like duck, or other richly flavoured meats.
