Description
In a nutshell:
A Riesling from Marlborough, New Zealand which is generous, off-dry and bursting with floral and citrus aromatics, vibrant acidity, and rich enough to make it beautifully balanced and mouth-watering.
The lowdown:
Marlborough is a good deal more than a one-trick pony - that trick being Sauvignon Blanc - and Riesling is one of the other cards up its sleeve which thrives in the region's long sunny days and cool nights to develop its signature citrus, floral, and mineral intensity. Few do it better than Framingham, whose Classic Riesling has earned a reputation as a regional benchmark. Pale gold in the glass, it's fragrant and complex, with honeysuckle, jasmine, and a touch of quinine on the nose. Stone fruit flavours and a hint of beeswax add richness, while a subtle creaminess brings in a little viscosity. Generous and off-dry, it walks the fine line between sweetness and bright citrus, making for a brilliantly balanced, endlessly fascinating wine.
The Producer:
Framingham was launched back in 1994 with just one Riesling, and has since expanded to include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. From their winery in Renwick, produce wines from an organic 19.5-hectare estate and other selected sites. Their Riesling vines, planted in 1981, are among the oldest in Marlborough. Earlier winemaker Dr Andrew Hedley, from Gateshead on Tyneside, brought with him an obsession with - and a reputation for - making great Riesling. In 2020 he was succeeded by his assistant Andrew Brown who, sharing his mentor's love of Riesling, is a more than capable pair of hands as Framingham continues to forge ahead.
When to drink:
Classic in name and nature, this is a brilliant match for Asian-style pork dishes like sticky hoisin ribs or Thai pork larb. Its off-dry richness and bright citrus keep spice and sweetness in line - no flavour tantrums here.
