Description
In a nutshell:
Richly off-dry with lively acidity, this Mosel Riesling is full of juicy stone and tropical fruit, with loads of flavour, plenty of zip, and a finish that just keeps going.
The lowdown:
A classic Mosel Spätlese - one of those gloriously off-dry to medium-sweet styles that's long been and unjustly relegated to niche status. Made from late-harvested grapes, it has lower alcohol and naturally higher sweetness, with ripe, concentrated fruit and a lovely sense of balance. The nose is all tropical richness - pineapple, apricot, peach - and that aromatic ripeness flows through onto the palate. What really lifts it is the bright, well-judged acidity and clean minerality, bringing freshness and precision to all that flavour. These wines may be a rare sight these days, but they're still full of character and well worth their place at the table.
The Producer:
Dr Loosen is one of the big names in German wine - and for good reason. Based in the Mosel Valley, this family-run estate has been making Riesling for over 200 years, and under Ernst Loosen's watch since the late 80s, things have only got better. The steep, slate-covered slopes of their vineyards produce seriously classy fruit, and the wines are full of that trademark Mosel elegance and mineral bite. Tradition's still a big part of what they do, but there's plenty of forward thinking too - and the focus on quality and sustainability runs right through the range.
When to drink:
Cracking with Thai green curry, roast pork and crackling, or blue cheese with pears - the rich fruit and zippy acidity handle bold flavours brilliantly, and it'll happily bide its time in the wine rack for a few years too.
