Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe and easy going Spanish red from a wild and remote part of Castilla y Léon.
The lowdown:
This part of Spain has long been a wine producing area, but it a relative newcomer when it comes to high quality wines. The Antòn family, who also have interests in Rioja, spotted the potential and have been making excellent wines here since the mind 2000s. Made from 100% Tempranillo, or Tinta de Toro as its know locally, it's aged in a mix of French and American oak for nine months prior to bottling. The result is a wine that's a deep black cherry in colour and has striking aromas of fresh red and black berry fruit. On the palate, it's well-balanced and structured with a medium to full body and a pleasant, succulent finish.
The Producer:
Bodegas Vetus is one of a small group owned and run by Lalo Antón and his family. After having established themselves in Rioja and Ribero del Duero, and seeing the potential of the Toro region, they purchased 20 hectares of vines here in 2003 and followed that with a winery on the estate which opened in 2008. Growing conditions in Toro, in northwest Spain on the Duero River, are extreme with cold, frosty, windy winters and hot summers challenging the viticulturalist. However, the poor soils and subsequently low yields result in wines with excellent flavour and colour intensity. The winemaking team at Vetus have used their expertise to make a range of exemplary reds with excellent flavour and intensity to which they've recently added a white made from Verdejo in neighbouring Rueda.
When to drink:
With plenty of bold flavours it's a good match to things like beef, duck and other rich game game dishes; also strong mature cheeses.
Suitable for Vegans
