Description
In a nutshell:
A delicious crunchy and fruity French red from one of the main estates in this small south western appellation.
The lowdown:
Lo Sang del Pais (blood of the soil), is made from Fer Servadou and is bottled in the spring after harvest without any oak ageing. It's got instantly appealing aromas of raspberries, blackcurrant and the taste is of soft ripe red fruits with a touch of spice and clean underlying minerality. The tannins are nicely integrated and it has a bright and vibrant finish.
The Producer:
Domaine du Cros is run by Phillipe Teulier and his son Julien who have 30 hectares of vines in the small and isolated appellation of Marcillac in the Aveyron département on the southern edges of the Massif Central. It was once an area with several thousands of hectares under vine, but this had dwindled to less than 200 only a few years ago. Until the early 1980s Domaine du Cros themselves produced only around 4,000 bottles a year from just 1 hectare, but since then they've set about acquiring existing old vineyards and planting up new areas, sometimes on steeply sloped terrain and they're now one of the biggest remaining producers in the appellation.
When to drink:
Bright and vivacious, this is good very slightly chilled and with a plate of charcuterie it's a real treat.
