Description
In a nutshell:
A rich and soft Traditional Method Californian sparkling wine.
The lowdown:
In this exemplary wine Domaine Carneros has set a high standard for Methode Traditional Californian sparklers. The blend changes slightly every vintage, but is usually around half Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and is typically rich and full-bodied. With peach, lemon, almond, toasty and honeyed notes on the palate balanced by fresh acidity and with fine bubbles, this is a fantastic, highly rewarding Champagne alternative from the Napa Valley.
The Producer:
Sitting at the southern end of the Napa Valley Domaine Carneros gives away its French roots with its impressive Château style winery that sits conspicuously looming over the Sonoma highway. The estate was founded in 1987 by the family behind Champagne Taittinger with a parcel of vines in the Napa Valley's best sparkling wine area with the intention of making Californian wines to emulate their superlative Champagnes. Their vineyards extend to over 150 hectares all close to the château with about two thirds planted with Pinot Noir and the remainder with Chardonnay. In addition to an impressive array of sparkling wines they also produce a number of excellent quality still reds made their Pinot Noir vineyards.
When to drink:
Try with goats cheese, oysters and seafood in general, poultry based dishes, or with Asian cuisine.
Suitable for Vegans
