Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 50.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Amber-gold, rich and nutty - ten years in cask have brought depth, polish and a gentle sweetness, all balanced by Madeira's lively cut of acidity.
The Lowdown:
Not quite a dessert wine, but heading that way - rich, nutty and deeply satisfying without tipping into syrupy. This ten-year-old Madeira shows the warmth and weight that come from long cask ageing, but the naturally high acidity keeps it bright and full of life. Toffee, orange peel and dried apricot meet a tang of citrus that reins it all back in. Medium-sweet, full of flavour and exactly where it should be.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Best served cool rather than cold. Works well with blue cheese, sticky toffee pudding or fruitcake, and keeps its shape for weeks once opened.
