Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 50.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Amber-gold, nutty and smooth - a ten-year-old Madeira that strikes the perfect balance between freshness and richness.
The Lowdown:
Warm and nutty but with a freshness that cuts straight through - this is Madeira at its most balanced. Aged for a decade in oak, it brings together mellow sweetness, gentle acidity and an easy, rounded feel. Dried apricot, roasted almond and caramelised orange sit over a clean, savoury backbone that keeps everything bright and lifted. A Madeira that does both rich and refreshing at the same time.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Serve cool rather than cold so the flavours show properly. Pairs nicely with firm cheese, cured meats or something lightly smoked. Keeps well once opened, so it doesnt all have to go at once.
