Description
Argentina: Mendoza
Firm & Spicy Red
Medium-Bodied - Lightly Oaked
Vegan - ABV 13.5% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Argentinian Bonarda with juicy dark fruit, softer tannins, a fresher edge and a subtle touch of oak.
The Lowdown:
For those curious about the lighter, more easy-going face of Argentina's reds, Bonarda is the grape to know. It shares Malbec's generosity of ripe fruit but swaps out the burly tannins for a gentler structure and brisker acidity. This example from Don Cristóbal has a brief spell in oak, enough to bring a hint of spice without weighing it down. Blackberry, cherry and plum are front and centre, the palate bright and rounded, finishing with a crisp lift. It's supple, approachable and shows that Argentina can do nuance every bit as well as power.
The Producer:
Set up in 1998 by the Lapania family, Don Cristóbal is a Mendoza winery with a notably international outlook. From their base in Luján de Cuyo they draw fruit from vineyards across the region, giving plenty of scope in style and character. The wines themselves lean modern but not over extracted, combining Mendoza's natural richness with a fresher edge. Still very much a family enterprise, they have played their part in establishing Argentina as a major player in the wine world.
When to Drink:
Best alongside grilled meats, empanadas or tomato-rich pasta dishes, where its freshness and softer frame prove a handy match.
