Description
Spain: Balearics & Canaries
Firm & Spicy Red
Medium-Bodied - Lightly Oaked
Organic - ABV 13.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
An expressive and incisive Tenerife red with abundant forest fruit and cherry flavours, soft structure and a touch of oak.
The Lowdown:
On the Canaries, quality-focused small producers, like Tajinaste, are the ones who've built the islands' reputation for quality that far outstrips the minuscule footprint in terms of quantity. When it comes to reds, it's the native Listán Negro that dominates - a grape with natural, medium-bodied charm - and that's exactly what we have here. Red cherry and redcurrant run right through, with a hint of rose petal, blood orange and a flicker of black pepper adding edge. A light touch of oak adds shape to the easy-going tannins but never impacts the juicy, lively character. Fresh, approachable and definitely from off the beaten track.
The Producer:
Nestled on the volcanic slopes of Tenerife's mighty Mount Teide, Bodegas Tajinaste is a bijou family winery. Cooling trade winds, courtesy of the Atlantic's 'vientos alisios', breeze through their Valle de la Orotava vineyards, situated between 300 and 500 metres above sea level. Here, on just six hectares, the García family works their magic. They're custodians of ancient vines, some Listán Negro and Listán Blanco planted over a century ago. With a focus on modern methods that respect tradition, Bodegas Tajinaste make wines that really show off the Canary Islands' unique viticultural heritage.
When to Drink:
Easy-going enough to enjoy on its own, yet food-friendly with charcuterie, cheese or grilled meats.
