From Lionel Faury's admired estate, it's all about poise and finesse and grown on impossibly steep south and southeast-facing slopes, it delivers lush aromas of blueberry and bramble, wrapped up in fine tannins and perfectly pitched acidity. Exquisitely graceful, it's no surprise this vintage caught the attention of the critics at Jancis Robinson, who were suitably impressed.
The Producer:
Lionel Faury's story begins with his grandfather, who settled in Chavanay in the 1950s and started growing vines alongside other fruits like cherries and peaches. Back then, wine was just part of the mix. It was Lionel's father, Philippe, who shifted gears in the late 1970s, making viticulture the focus, expanding the vineyards, and bottling under the domaine's name. Since taking over in 2006, Lionel has kept the momentum going. He crafts sought-after wines from Condrieu, St-Joseph, and Côte-Rôtie, with a focus on traditional methods and minimal intervention. The result - elegant wines that have made their mark among the Rhône's finest.
When to drink:
Still a youngster with years ahead of it, this works brilliantly now with coq au vin or a gratin dauphinois, its smoky elegance holding its own against those hearty, old-school flavours.
