Description
France: Northern Rhône
Complex & Structured Red
Medium-Bodied - Oaked
ABV 13.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
From the steep slopes of Côte-Rôtie, this is supple and elegant, with silky dark fruit, a touch of pepper, and a lovely sense of balance and finesse.
The Lowdown:
Côte-Rôtie is one of the northern Rhône's most sought-after reds, loved for its finesse and complexity - as a contrast to the richer, more powerful wines of Hermitage. This example from Stéphane Montez comes from the steep, south-east facing Bons Arrets vineyard - a challenging plot to work, but one that produces exceptional results. Aged in seasoned oak barrels to let the terroir take centre stage, it has a beautifully layered mix of hedgerow berries, violets, and a savoury hint of tapenade. The tannins are polished, with bright acidity adding freshness, while subtle notes of woodsmoke and lingering spice complete the finish. Refined, full of character and an elegant expression of Côte-Rôtie's charm.
The Producer:
Domaine du Monteillet, tucked away in the Northern Rhône, is one of those estates that quietly commands respect. The Montez clan has diligently tended their vines for generations, perched high above the village of Chavannay. Now, Stéphane Montez runs the show he has the knack for teasing out the nuances of the terroir. The wines aren't flashy, but they've got depth and heart. Domaine du Monteillet is that rare breed - reliable, consistent, and quietly brilliant.
When to Drink:
Try it with venison goulash or wild boar stew - its savoury notes and silky tannins are a dream with rich, gamey dishes. Built to age, it's good for 15 years.
