Description
In a nutshell:
A refined Northern Rhône red with vibrant red berry notes, subtle spice, and a fresh, supple elegance that reflects its granite terroir.
The lowdown:
Cornas, one of the Northern Rhône's top red wine appellations, is known for its steep granite slopes - perfect territory for Syrah. Vincent Paris' Granit 30 comes from younger vines planted on 30° east-facing slopes, soaking up the morning sunshine. Aged for three months in large foudres, it's all about juicy blackberry fruit with a bit of bite and that signature granitic minerality. Restrained and elegant, it still packs in plenty of dark berry flavours with a hint of pepper, leading to a long, satisfying finish. A nicely polished expression of Cornas.
The Producer:
Vincent Paris started out in 1997 with just one hectare of vines on the granite slopes of Cornas and has gradually expanded to around ten hectares today. Cornas, on the opposite bank of the Rhône to Hermitage, is known for approachable, earlier-drinking wines than its illustrious neighbour, and Vincent is one of the key producers leading this style. He farms sustainably, working mostly along organic lines, and his wines are known for their balance and elegance. A steady hand and careful approach make his wines a reflection of both the land and his thoughtful winemaking.
When to drink:
Slow-cooked beef cheek with black garlic or beef tartare with smoked oil work a treat, balancing the wine's dark fruit and peppery edge with bold, inventive flavours.
