Description
In a nutshell:
A bold Châteauneuf, full of rich red and black fruits, a hint of spice, and a smooth finish that lingers nicely.
The lowdown:
This is a benchmark example of the southern Rhône's most famous wine. It's led by Grenache with a touch of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, plus a smattering of some of the other 13 permitted varieties for good measure. Aged in large oak foudres for 18 months, it's got the firm structure and robust power you'd expect. On the nose, think blackberries, cassis, and a hint of liquorice, while the palate brings red fruits balanced by spice, cedar, and a touch of pepper. Full-bodied and smooth, with enough of a spicy kick to keep things interesting, it rounds off with a satisfyingly long finish.
The Producer:
The Mestre family has been part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for four generations, with Christophe Mestre now at the helm after taking over from his father Jacques. The estate includes 17 hectares of vines spread across different parcels, each with its own distinct soil. This variety allows Christophe to create wines that capture the character of the Châteauneuf terroir. It's thoughtful winemaking rooted in tradition, with a clear focus on bringing out the best of the region. Well-crafted wines, full of classic charm.
When to drink:
Slow-roasted lamb with Provençal herbs or pork loin with garlic and fennel would be spot on with this - hearty, earthy dishes that complement the bold fruit and subtle spice of the wine perfectly.
