Description
In a nutshell:
Rich with dark berry flavours, subtle oak, and a smooth, earthy depth, this wine captures the approachable style of a classic Right Bank Bordeaux.
The lowdown:
Bill Boulter is not one to blow his trumpet, preferring to let his wines do the talking and the reliably good quality he produces each year from his small estate are really advert enough. Lussac St-Emilion is right next door to St Emilion itself and the wines often have a lot in common. This Merlot dominated right bank claret has soft and restrained fruit that still maintains good concentration and freshness accompanied with lovely developed oak spices.
The Producer:
Owned and managed for several years by Englishman Bill Boulter Château La Croix de Grézard is a boutique estate of just nine hectares of vines in the Lussac St-Émilion appellation. Here, year after year alongside his winemaking partner Michel Danlos, he makes excellent, understated wines which fully represent the elegance of right bank Bordeaux. Very definitely an operation that flies under the radar in terms of self promotion they like to leave their wines to do all the talking.
When to drink:
Ready to drink now, this smooth, dark-fruited wine pairs beautifully with classic game dishes like canard aux cerises or civet de lièvre, as its earthy depth and gentle oak complement rich, savoury flavours with a touch of sweetness.
