Tucked away in St-Étienne-de-Lisse at the base of the St-Émilion plateau, this is made from 100% Merlot and is all about discreet elegance. After a year in a mix of new and used barriques, it gains depth and texture without overdoing it. On the nose, delicate red fruit meets a subtle toasty note, while the palate delivers a full, rounded feel with strawberry and blackberry flavours. Its balanced structure and soft tannins keep it fresh and elegant on the finish. A quietly confident wine that doesn't shout but makes a good impression.
The Producer:
Château Jacques Noir comes from Vignobles Ducourt, based in Ladaux in the heart of Bordeaux's Entre-Deux-Mers. It has grown from small beginnings in the 1950s under Henri Ducourt into quite a substantial operation. Now spanning 14 châteaux and 450 hectares, it's still very much a family affair, with Henri's grandchildren Bernard, Philippe, and Marie Christine steering the ship. Their vineyards follow the agriculture raisonnée system, favouring minimal intervention and cutting back on artificial pesticides - an approach that pays dividends in the glass. The range is as impressive as it is approachable, offering excellent quality without breaking the bank.

Perfect with something hearty - think garbure (a filling cabbage and ham soup) or a proper poule au pot - where the rich, rustic flavours meet their match in the wine's silky tannins and dark fruit.
