Description
In a nutshell:
A fine, fresh and elegant left-bank Bordeaux made by the team at Chateau Haut-Bages Libéral.
The lowdown:
This Haut-Médoc definitely has some pedigree. Coming from a single 8 hectare vineyard of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot in biodynamic conversion just to the north of Paulliac, owned by Claire Villars Lurton who runs Chateau Haut-Bages Libéral, made at that same great chateau by the same team as the Grand Vin, and from the very good 2015 vintage. Whether you are just after a really good Médoc or a stepping stone into the great wines of the left-bank of Bordeaux this could be your wine! Aromas of fresh, ripe black fruits and notes of cedar and spice lead onto a medium-full bodied palate with great freshness and balance coming through with integrated tannins and a persistent finish.
The Producer:
Château Haut-Bages Libéral in the highly regarded Médoc village of Paulliac is one of the fifth growths of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and produces exemplary wines. With the benefit of a favourable site near to the world-renowned Château Latour the vineyards extend to nearly 30 hectares mostly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being mainly Merlot. The fortunes of the estate took a turn for the better in the early 1980s with a change of ownership and since 1999 it's been run by Claire Villars Lurton, who also looks after Châteaux Ferrière and La Gurgue, who has carved out for the estate a reputation for high quality wines that represent superb value for classed growth claret.
When to drink:
Try with grilled or roast lamb, shepherd's pie, cold meats and terrines, or hard cheeses.
Organic
