Description
In a nutshell:
A graceful Haut-Médoc with ripe fruits, soft tannins, and a hint of cedar, striking a good balance between elegance and approachability.
The lowdown:
This elegant Fifth Growth has a charming, slightly old-school feel, being led by Cabernet Sauvignon in true left-bank style. The nose is full of blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry notes - fruit-forward and inviting, yet still refined. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, and a hint of spice on the finish. There's an impressive richness to it, as well with polished tannins and bright, fresh flavours that linger nicely. Beautifully balanced claret that captures the essence of the Haut-Médoc with great winemaking at its core.
The Producer:
Château Cantemerle is one of the Haut-Médoc's most reliable estates, located on the left bank of the Gironde, just north of Bordeaux. With a history stretching back to the 1300s, it's perhaps best known for its slightly awkward omission from the 1855 classification - a mistake swiftly corrected when it was added as a 5ème Cru Classé a few months later. Unlike some of its Cru Classé peers in Pauillac, Margaux or Saint-Julien, Cantemerle being a "mere" Haut-Médoc often doesn't command comparable prices, which helps keep it pretty good value for money. Its location away from the flashier parts of the Médoc working in its favour to the consumer in this respect.
When to drink:
This is drinking beautifully now and will happily evolve over the next decade or so. It's perfect with something hearty like duck confit or a garlic-laden lamb stew to bring out its ripe fruit and supple tannins.
