Description
In a nutshell:
A big Cabernet Sauvignon dominated South African Bordeaux blend.
The lowdown:
The truly picturesque Franschhoek winery of Chamonix continues to produce some stellar wines and this big Cabernet Sauvignon dominated Bordeaux blend definitely sits as one of their best. The grapes are bunch selected in the vineyard and then individually sorted by hand on tables so only the best, ripest fruit makes it into the bottle - after being matured for 18 months in oak barrels. A deep mulberry colour in the glass with intense aromas of vanilla, sweet ripe cherries, blackberries, cinnamon and sweet spice. Well-structured on the palate with a full, round and smooth body, grippy tannins and a long finish.
The Producer:
Situated above the fertile Franschhoek valley Chamonix Wine Farm is all about place. They aim at authentic old world-styles of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc that are full of grace and elegance. Since being acquired by German-born entrepreneur and adventurer Chris Hellinger two decades ago, the estate has undergone tremendous improvements, and in addition to their top quality they offer visitors a host of culinary and recreational options in spectacular surroundings. Heading up the winemaking team is the talented Niel Bruwer.
When to drink:
Drinking beautifully now, though it will age very well over the next few years. Grilled and roast lamb, and most types of red meats go well with this.
