Description
In a nutshell:
A ruby red wine with ripe red fruit and slight notes of spice from Tuscany, Italy.
The lowdown:
This wine is produced from a 15-hectare vineyard in an area called Santa Pia, located on the ridges just below the town of Montepulciano. This particular area has sandy loamy soils rich in rocky deposits to improve drainage. The first vintage of this wine was produced in 2001. The 2017 vintage was characterised by lower yields, yet the grapes were able to achieve optimal ripeness. The grapes are gently pressed and transferred to stainless steel tanks for a controlled alcoholic ferment at 26-28 degrees Celsius, this is to preserve Sangioveses typical aromas. Maceration on the skins took place over a period of 20 days. The wine then goes through malolactic fermentation in 500-liter barrels and aged for approximately 12 months. The wine will then be aged for 20 months in bottle. This carefully control process produces a wine with intense ripe red fruit and plum jam flavours, and slight hints of tobacco and cloves. The palate is elegant, refined and characterised by excellent freshness and mouth-filling tannins, soft and silky.
When to drink:
This wine can be enjoyed now or laid down to continue to develop for another 5-8 years. Would pair well with rich beef and lamb dishes.
