Description
In a nutshell:
A classic cool climate Pinot Noir, aromatic with loads of red fruit flavours, and soft tannins. From Kent.
The lowdown:
This style of red wine leans more towards the cool climate New World regions rather than Burgundy. A wine only produced from exceptional vintages, such as the ones of 2018 and 2020. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, this is not a lighter style English red wine. Instead, a fuller bodied wine, that packs a punch with the large amount of red berry fruits, such as cherry and raspberry. But it is balanced well by the spicy vanilla flavour, as a result of using both new French and American oak during the ageing process. It leaves a lasting impression with its soft but firm tannins.
The Producer: Balfour Winery
When Richard and Leslie Balfour-Lynn planted their first vines near Staplehurst in Kent back in 2002, they had plans to become leaders in the budding English wine industry. Their estate, nestled in the Weald of Kent, is perfect for viticulture and while they're best known for their sparkling wines, their still wines are also top-notch. They've definitely hit their objectives, with their wines certainly being held in high regard. As well as this, they've dived into "enotourism" in a big way, proudly calling themselves England's "best vineyard to visit".
When to drink:
A brilliant match with either pheasant, partridge, game or try with roast lamb.
