Description
Portugal: Dão & Beira
Rich & Powerful Red
Medium-Bodied - Oaked
Vegan - ABV 13.5% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A bold, brooding food-friendly red, from the Bairrada region of northern Portugal
The Lowdown:
Close your eyes and think Piedmont Nebbiolo - only from Portugal's Atlantic shore. This is Bairrada's Baga in a classical mould: bright acidity, fine-but-firm tannins and red-fruited focus - sour cherry, cranberry, pomegranate - over a dry, long finish. Fourteen months in French and Russian oak brings cedar, clove and a gentle polish, smoothing edges without masking the fruit. Mid-weight and well structured, it's built to go with food.
The Producer:
Bacalhôa is one of the country's largest and most forward-thinking producers, with vineyards stretching from the Douro in the north to the Alentejo in the south. Their range includes well-known, large production brands as well as some seriously impressive premium wines and everything in between. The best value is probably found in their mid-range offerings. These wines, while retaining a distinctive Portuguese character, are very approachable and offer great value for money.
When to Drink:
Bags of wine for the money, this works really well with thing like pork belly, ribs and duck.
