Description
At a Glance:
| Complex & Structured Red | Medium-Full Body | Oaked | Tuscany & Central Italy | ABV 14.0% | 75cl |
In a Nutshell:
This Tuscan superstar delivers a knockout combination of juicy dark fruit, a sprinkle of spice, and a lingering earthy undercurrent.
The Lowdown:
Something of a legend this is one of the original "Super Tuscans", a cult classic that is always highly sought after. It's mostly Sangiovese with a Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc making up the remainder of the blend, but what has always marked it out is being aged in small oak barrels, as they do in Bordeaux, which gives it its signature rich and captivating complexity. Despite its richness, its displays a surprising sleekness and vibrancy. Fine tannins provide a subtle structure, while a core of bright, sculpted fruit shines through, achieving a sublime balance that is as impressive as it is delicious.
The Producer
The Tignanello Estate is one of the crown jewels in the Marchesi Antinori family - arguably Italy's most prestigious and influential wine dynasty, with over six centuries of winemaking heritage. Set in the rolling hills of Chianti Classico, this historic estate is home to the groundbreaking Tignanello wine, first released in the 1970s. At the time, it broke with convention by blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc - an unheard-of move that helped spark Italy's Super Tuscan revolution. Grown on limestone-rich soils and crafted with precision, the wine remains a benchmark: deep, structured, and age-worthy, with dark cherry, tobacco, spice and savoury undertones. The estates vineyards are immaculately tended, reflecting Antinori's unwavering commitment to terroir and innovation. Today, Tignanello continues to turn heads, earning its place among the worlds most iconic winesproof that sometimes, challenging tradition is the best way to honour it.
When to Drink:
This has all the backbone to match with rich game, and a good slab of aged cheddar to finish the meal. If you want to keep it in the cellar, it will evolve beautifully until the end of the next decade.
