Forecourt Tasting - Weekend 3

Undiscovered Europe

Up next of the Forecourt Tastings we have Undiscovered Europe. This menu will showcase 6 wines from 6 different countries in Europe that we feel deserve the limelight to shine. The countries include Austria, Armenia, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, and North Macedonia.

Despite some of these countries having produced wine for decades, their popularity has always remained lower than the other three much more well know countries of Europe. France, Spain, and Italy have always dominated in the scale of production. Although we feel that the wines produced in these lesser-known countries are equal in quality. Often the lesser-known locations or grape varieties have put people off giving them a go. In addition, we think the value of the wine is amazing because they are lesser known you can get great wine for lower prices. All you need to do is try it first.

Come along on Friday and Saturday evening to taste these amazing wines and see why they could be a great alternative to mainstream European wines. The wines that will open for you to taste will be:

- ArmAs Karmrahyut, Armernia
- Kozlovic Teran, Istria
- Domaine Papagiannakos 'Erythros' - Tikves Smederevka Belo
- Teliani Valley ‘Winery 97’ Kakhuri No.8
- Judith Beck Weissburgunder

Open on Friday from 4pm till 7pm and on Saturday from 2pm till 7pm. There’s no need to book, just turn up and a member of staff will be there to guide you through the tasting of these amazing wines.

Undiscovered Europe

by Debbie Buckley

On the weekend of the 21st & 22nd October we jumped into the tasting of undiscovered European wines. We have 6 wines open to taste, this included 3 whites and 3 red wines. This included wines from Austria, Armenia, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, and North Macedonia. Everyone that tasted the wines were amazed to discover such amazing wines as great prices.

Starting with the whites, we dived straight into the Tikves Smederevka Belo from North Macedonia. Some were surprised that this country produced wines, and some even more surprised to find they produced this amazing wine. A beautifully crisp white wine, with flavours of citrus and floral, this was a favourite for some. Next the Judith Beck Weissburgunder from Austria. This producer is well known in this country, they follow biodynamic practices in the vineyard, which helps to produce a wine of this quality. Full of fruit and very slightly off dry, it wasn’t a style for everyone, but some were excited to have found a new wine to add to their baskets. Last of the whites was the Teliani Valley ‘Winery 97’ Kakhuri No.8 from Georgia. This was a bit of a marmite wine for some that tasted it. This is a rich and refreshing dry white wine with skin contact. This is in contract to the previous wine. But those that liked this style were very quick to grab a bottle.

First for the red wines was the ArmAs Karmrahyut from Armenia was a big shocker for some people. This is wine is ripe, full of vibrant red fruit and mature with developed flavours. It is made from one the countries indigenous varietals, Karmrahyut. And at only £16.00 (mixed 6 price) you get a lot of wine for your money. Next was the Kozlovic Teran from Croatia. This was a red wine with plenty of crunch and minerality. But with fresh red fruit to keep it refreshing on the palate. Another pleasant discovery for those that had not come across this wine before. Last for the red was the Domaine Papagiannakos ‘Erythros’ from Greece. Being priced the lowest of the three red wines, this wine is truly great value for money. This wine is made from the classic Greek Agiorgitiko grape and produces a wine with generous flavours of ripe red fruit.

So, overall, everyone that came down to taste through these amazing wines were happy to have found some new wines of great prices to add to their shopping list for the future. These wines are a great alternative to the classic mainstream European wines available, so if you’re looking for something a bit different, give them go, you defiantly won’t be disappointed.
